Here she is. Summer. She’s finally arrived. Better late than never I suppose. Just as we all gave up hope and packed our Birkenstocks away for another year. It was the last sunset we’ll see past 8pm for the remainder of 2023 just over a week ago and I was ready to relent that it was all over. I enjoy the gratitude that comes with an Indian summer. soaking up the dregs of warm lighter evenings before we snuggle up into autumn. Especially after the washout we’ve had this year. It’s left me feeling all fuzzy and hazy. Ready to glide my way through September in a dreamlike state.
This week my pre-ordered copy of Bad Influence by Oenone Forbat finally arrived! Through reflecting on a life lived largely online, is it even possible anymore to extract your real self from your digital one? Bad Influence is a memoir about coming of age at the peak of social media and navigating the new world of influencer culture. This week I intend to devour it all up, perhaps even in a single sitting.
I’ve watched the trailer for Past Lives about four times. I actually can’t wait for it to come out this Friday. I’ve had a recent revival of love for the cinema over the past couple of months. I’ve grown so fond of how nice it is to be engrossed in something where you’re detached from your phone and the incessant need to always be “on”. I think that’s why my love for swimming has grown so much recently too. Anyway, Past Lives is the story of two childhood friends reuniting again twenty years later. They reflect on their deep connection and the decisions they’ve made that have shaped the way their lives have turned out. It looks beautiful and I’m fully prepared to cry my eyes out.
I really tried to get my life together this week. A daunting and challenging task. But ‘if a cluttered desk is a cluttered mind’ and all that, then it was long overdue to just get my shit together. I had a haircut, tidied up my eyebrows, painted my nails, put in more prep for my newsletters, cooked a little more… Like I’ve been saying, it’s back to school baby and trying to seduce some Big Magic inspiration right now.
How annoying is it when candles burn out before their time? Yes I know it’s me. It’s my fault for not doing all the prep like cutting off the wick and letting them burn for at least an hour or whatever. Now my living room is reminiscent of a graveyard filled with candles gone too soon.
I went for a little Sunday stroll yesterday and along the way, I walked past some sunflowers standing tall and strong. It was a little glimmer- a small moment that sparks joy or peace. Sunflowers are associated with positivity, happiness, and optimism because they’re constantly facing the sun and looking towards the light. I thought moving into this week I’d try and channel a bit of blind faith from the mighty sunflower.
