Happy Monday my little Draftees. Last week flew by. Shit of a stick, breaking the sound barrier, quicker than you can say existential crisis kind of fast. Time really is zoom zooming away. I go through regular cycles of fixating on time and fearing the impact of its passing. It started to happen once again last week. We are fully in the throes of summer and I’m already feeling pre-emptively sad for when it ends. So, a little sneaky secret for you that Thursday’s newsletter will be dedicated entirely to some thoughts on time. But or now, here’s a look back on the first full week of June.
Over the weekend I finished reading High Fidelity by Nick Hornsby. I realised I rarely read books with a male protagonist so I found myself overly intrigued by being in the head of a man. A lacklustre, uninspired and lost man in his mid-thirties. I hated him, I felt sorry for him and so on. It was also written in the nineties. I’ve definitely been on the straight and narrow with more contemporary books for a while so it was nice to switch things up a bit.
Yellowface by R.F. Kuang was released a few weeks ago and I ordered a copy to take away with me to Thailand next week. ANOTHER holiday, yes. I’ve seen a lot of hype around its release and I’m excited to get stuck in. If you haven’t heard of it yet, what have you been doing? Here’s a snippet overview:
“Yellowface takes on questions of diversity, racism, and cultural appropriation not only in the publishing industry but the persistent erasure of Asian-American voices and history by Western white society.”
I started watching I Kissed A Boy on BBC, the ‘UK’s first gay dating show’ hosted by Dannii Minogue. I love a dose of reality TV and shows around dating never usually disappoint. It’s great to see some space being made for heterosexual relationships in the realm of reality TV. Much to celebrate in Pride Month.
I’ve had a vendetta against InPost lockers this week. I’m trying to live my best side-hustle small business owner Vinted life, but how am I supposed to do that when every time I go to post something the lockers are all full? They’ve gotten rid of the real-time updates (a truly riveting use of modern technology) so now you’ve just gotta chance it. Alas, I’ve not had the favour of the lucky locker gods this week.
Lots of big thinking over the past week and looking out for signs from the universe. “Rejection is redirection” has been living in my head rent free.
